Inspiration….
When I started learning to crochet half the battle was figuring out where and what I needed to get started. As much as I love walking through craft stores, as a beginner, it was more than a little overwhelming walking through the yarn craft aisles trying to figure out what I needed. So today, we will cover the basic tools and a few ‘nice to have’ tools of the craft!
Basic Beginnings….
To get started, you will need a crochet hook, yarn, and scissors. For beginners, I highly recommend buying a worsted-weight 4-ply yarn. I would also avoid anything that is overly sparkly, fluffy or fuzzy while you are learning. I made this mistake, and after several failed starts had to go back for a more basic yarn.
For a hook, I recommend picking up a classic Boye Size H/8 (5.00 MM) aluminum hook. This is a great place to start as its comfortable to hold and lightweight to use. As you continue to learn and try new yarns you may want to buy a larger set with a variety of sizes. TIP: To find the recommended hook size for your chosen yarn check the label as noted above.
Basic Bonuses…
A few crochet tool ‘niceties’ are a ruler for checking gauge, stitch markers, yarn needles, and yarn bobbins. Stitch markers are very low cost, but I use safety pins for marking or counting stitches. For crochet bobbins, I like to use dollar store clothespins. They save me a lot of time and tail weaving for projects requiring frequent color changes.
I started with Boye hooks, but find ergonomic hooks more comfortable for larger projects. While I love my set of Clover Amour hooks, this set of 10 is more expensive than Boye; which may not be worth the investment if you are just getting started.
For a more budget-friendly option, Amazon carries several budget ergonomic hooks sets at $10-15 for a set of 12 hooks.
On the Go….
When I first started, I carried my yarn, hook, and pattern around in a grocery bag which led to lots of yarn tangle, digging and lost hooks.
My first ‘on the go’ basic, was a crochet hook holder I made free-hand. A simple SC design I made room for scissors, hooks and stitch markers. It was from perfect, but has held up against years of use and abuse!
I still to use my DIY carrying case but eventually upgraded to a larger, zippered crochet hook organizer for my frequently used hooks and supplies.
Eventually, I acquired a Mira Handcrafts crochet tote; it is lightweight, durable and keeps me organized on the go.
There are many more wonderful crochet tools to be found, but a basic yarn, hook, and scissors will bring yards of crochet crafting goodness! Leave a comment below with your questions or share your favorite crochet tool for beginners. Happy Hooking!
This makes me want to start crocheting again.
Thank you, I took a crochet ‘hiatus’ for a few years, and it just took the right inspiration and a good friend to help me get ‘re-started’. Thankfully, it’s like riding a bike and comes back quickly. Hope you do find your inspiration take up a hook and reconnect with the craft.
