Dreaming of your next graphgan, but can’t find the perfect graph? Has your crochet muse been dreaming of design that is uniquely yours? Check out three beginner-friendly options to help you design crochet graphs like a master!
Pen and Paper:
There is something about good old pen and paper. Technology is wonderful, but I still love keeping a paper planner and writing things down. Similarly, there is just something special about putting pen or pencil to paper and bringing your dream graph to life.
Excel Graphs:
As much as I love pen and paper, my preferred medium for graph crafting is Microsoft Excel. To set up my graph, I open a new spreadsheet and adjust the rows height and column width to create standardized graph squares.
This can be done by selecting: Format >> Column >> Width >> ‘.21’,
Followed by Format >> Row >> Height >> ‘.21’.
TIP: This is my preferred width and height, but you can experiment until you find your preferred cell size.
Finally, you will want to make sure you turn on all borders and can use the ‘fill’ button to pic your colors and design you graph.
Perhaps, one of my favorite features when using Exel is the ability to include ‘Inspiration’ images related to the project by inserting them next to the graph I am working on.
Crochet Graph Software:
If Excel is not your thing, there are some great software programs for graph pattern creation. You can purchase a software program, but my favorite free tool is a browser-based pattern maker called Stitch Fiddle. This program can be used for creating knitting, cross stitch or crochet patterns and graphs.
The pattern maker allows for the creation of different types of crochet patterns, and the graph maker will allow you to upload your own reference photo, or design your graph free-hand.
Before generating the graph, you can adjust the width, height and the preferred number of colors.
For this post, I made a 50×50 Monster truck graph with 7 colors from the reference photo below. TIP: It’s easy to tweak the colors to your preference once the graph is generated.
All of the above options are beginner friendly and fun ways to help you design the graph of your dreams, so let your crochet muse run wild!
