Thomas the Train Crochet Blanket Inspiration…
The idea for this project came from my oldest son. For years, I talked about making him the perfect blanket; but could never find the right inspiration for my project.
He was born in a town founded on the rail industry and we would often take him to the transportation museum. Even as a toddler he loved seeing the HUGE trains, and could spend hours playing with the museum train table.
His fascination with trains and a budding interest in Thomas fueled my interest in attempting a graphgan if I could find the right graph. I was able to find a few ideas, but nothing quite fit what I was looking for.
Eventually, I found a Perler bead pattern that served as a reference to create my own graph in Microsoft Excel. With the basic picture complete, I added a custom border, and ‘Sleepytime Express’ to the graph with a goal of making a toddler bed sized blanket.
GRAPH:
There are many different types of stitches or ways to create a graph-gan, but for this project, used bobble stitch and for the border and letters I alternated between bobble stitch and HDC.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
- Medium weight (4 ply) Yarn in the following colors (or colors of your choice): Black, Blue, Gray, Green, Red, White, Yellow. [Snag the yarn I used here]
- 5.00 MM (Size H) Crochet hook
- Scissors
- OPTIONAL: Yarn Needle, Bobbins (I used DollarTree clothesline hooks)
COMPLETION TIME:
I am not a fast crocheter and with work, home and two small boys I was not able to crochet every day so the full project took me ~10 months, but was incredibly fun to make.
DIMENSIONS:
The completed blanket was approximately 41 in X 45 in, but exact dimensions will vary based on stitch type, tension and yarn and hook size selected.
BACKING:
My son is an absolute ‘snuggler’ and the weight and stitch type was warm but not as soft as I preferred, so opted to line the back with fleece for extra softness.
There are several ways to attach fleece backing to the crochet project but for this project, I preferred to ‘tie’ the fleece lining using the method described here.
The end result, though far from perfect, was a fun, warm, and snuggle-ready blanket that my son adores. Ready for to try it for yourself? Print this post and graph to get started.
